The most important writing lesson I ever learned was not in a screenwriting class, but a fiction class.

This was senior year of college. Most of us had already been accepted into grad school of some sort. We felt powerful, we felt talented, and most of all, we felt artistic.

It was the advanced fiction workshop, and we did an entire round of workshops with everyone’s best stories, their most advanced work, their most polished pieces. It was very technical and, most of all, very artistic.

IE: They were boring pieces of pretentious crap.

Now the teacher was either a genius OR was tired of our shit, and decided to give us a challenge. Flash fiction, he said. Write something as quickly as possible. Make it stupid. Make it not mean a thing, just be a quick little blast of words.

And, of course, we all got stupid. Little one and two pages of prose without the barriers that it must be good. Little flashes of characters, little bits of scenarios.

And they were electric. All of them. So interesting, so vivid, not held back by the need to write important things or artistic things.

One sticks in my mind even today. The guys original piece was a thinky, thoughtful piece relating the breaking up of threesomes to volcanoes and uncontrolled eruptions that was just annoying to read. But his flash fiction was this three page bit about a homeless man who stole a truck full of coca cola and had to bribe people to drink the soda so he could return the cans to recycling so he could afford one night with the prostitute he loved.

It was funny, it was heartfelt, and it was so, so, so well written.

And just that one little bit of advice, the write something short and stupid, changed a ton of people’s writing styles for the better.
It was amazing. So go. Go write something small. Go write something that’s not artistic. Go write something stupid. Go have fun.

I feel like @lokispriestess inadvertently touched on something deeply concerning here, because this isn’t solely evidence of disingenuousness, it’s also evidence of discontinuity.

The 1920s were actually startlingly progressive on a lot of fronts. Then the Great Depression hit, and everything backslid.

There have been several time periods in the last century where a widespread regression took place. Germany in the 1930s is one famous example. The 1980s in the West, starring Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher, the AIDS epidemic and nuclear threat and the push to criminalize Black people in America, were far worse for a lot of marginalized people than the 60s-70s.

And a lot of garden-variety sexism went unquestioned because most of the people who had been questioning it in the previous decades were just too fucking tired of dealing with distortions, and when they weren’t busy trying to keep their friends alive they were being weaponized against each other by state-sponsored manipulators.

No wonder the 90s dawned on “colorblind” leftism and “no politics, people are just people!”

I didn’t understand quite so viscerally until the last few years what it was like to experience massive progress in your lifetime and then experience its reversal.

There’s a kind of generational trauma to it, a widespread cultural sadness. A helplessness - could I have done something differently to prevent this? Could we have taken more responsibility, kept a better eye on our enemies? We see what is being lost around us, and it all moves by so fast.

It falls on all of us who care, now, to preserve the knowledge of past and present for the future.

To me, this is why now is the time we fight. Every time we think that we’ve pushed it back, the regressive wave shows up again and tries to eradicate us. And the thing about it is that we keep gaining visibility and we keep building culture and we’re more present and powerful than ever, so naturally authoritarians are scared shitless again.

We are living evidence that their world is going to change, they just can’t see that it’s for the better. And it’s going to be up to everyone who claims to care about compassion, society, and human dignity in general that’s going to have to stop them and make them confront what they’ve done. We as a people have to heal the wounds that we’ve left fester too long and this is the first time in which I think we might do it.

Trump was us losing a battle in a war that’s been going on for a long time. It doesn’t mean that we’ve lost the war, it just means that we suffered a setback. Authoritarianism has risen again, only this time they’re incompetent and weak and barely have control of power. If we can keep them from burning down the house then we’ve got a shot at getting back to progress.

Can we turn this around? Maybe. Probably.

But there are still some things, knowledge and culture and lives, that have been lost and changed irrevocably. Blogs deleted from the internet. Creators who have given up on their work due to harrassment. All the violence done to sex workers since SESTA. Disabled people in the UK and elsewhere who have died under austerity policies. The backlash against LGBTQ+ people in Russia and China. The suicides in the wake of the 2016 US election, good people and friends who are no longer with us. The melting glaciers and the hurricanes and fires.

And no matter how hard we fight, no matter how quickly we turn things around, entropy doesn’t give back what it’s taken, and I feel like that’s changed me. That even as I roll up my sleeves to continue the fight, even as I look towards the future with optimism, I also mourn for what could have been in my lifetime and will always carry that with me.

But you’re right that things still can and do change for the better over the longer scale. Five steps forward, four steps back - but they do, as long as we keep trying and keep caring. And we must.

We’ve lost ground; we’ve lost people–but things are still better than they were 40 years ago. We haven’t lost the ground they want to take away.

The Fair Housing Act was in 1968. While plenty of landlords were finding ways to refuse to rent or sell to people of color long after that - a $200M settlement with Associated Bank in Chicago was made in 2015 - cities no longer get to tell people of color they have to leave.

Women won the right to have their own bank accounts in 1974. There are men who still deeply resent this - but even in conservative circles, they’re considered kooks.

Lawrence v Texas decriminalized being gay in 2003. Even though some states can still fire someone for being gay, can refuse to rent to them, can cost them custody of their children - they can’t be sent to prison for who they love.

All those genders that have been changed on state ID cards: also not going back.

Remember, when it all gets depressing and you’re weeping for what’s being ripped away from us: they’re never, EVER getting back the America they want, the one where cis het white men always got the best of everything and could literally kill with impunity anyone who disagreed with that.

Things used to be worse. A lot worse. That’s not, “so be happy with what we have,” but “be aware that they are not winning.” The asshole nazi crowd wants a country that has no chance to exist, that never had an internet where the poor and oppressed could find each other and the press, that never did business with someone for three years before you ever saw their face or heard their voice, that never coordinated business meetings around holidays in India and Egypt.

They want today’s tech, today’s entertainments, today’s conveniences, without the inclusiveness and diversity that made those possible. It won’t happen.

They are lashing out, like an angry toddler whose toy got taken away because he was starting to break it. They’re going to hurt people, even kill people.

But they’re not getting what they want. We’re not going back.

And we outnumber them now. Cis het white males are the ultimate minority group demanding special treatment.

Thank you. This is a good reminder, and concrete achievements a good remedy against existential despair.

Part of the reason that Wallace and Gromit is so successful is that every single character is just so expressive. The people’s lips move like half a foot every frame. Gromit has basically only his eyebrows, and he has more personality than two average real people. The Moon Machine was up there with the rest of them, and it didn’t even have a face.

The penguin, on the other hand, never expressed anything at all. It’s designed almost explicitly with purpose of not expressing anything. It’s practically featureless, with only the bare minimum of detail necessary to tell you it’s a penguin. It has a face, but it never uses it. It has no sclera, meaning it stares straight ahead at all times. It actively repels most attempts to ascribe any emotion to it – at best, you can feel that it is coldly satisfied, perhaps detachedly frustrated. I’d say it’s like a robot wearing the skin of an animal, but that’s literally the villain of A Close Shave, and he was pretty expressive.

It’s like Aardman found a tiny crack in the likability curve, far away from the uncanny valley but a hell of a lot deeper, and decided to build a penguin there.

If you’re European, in a couple of weeks you will be denied any and all access to fandom contents on Tumblr and everywhere else on the internet. Here’s why.

On June, 20th the JURI of European Parliament approved of the articles 11 and 13 of the new Copyright Law. These articles are also known as the “Link Tax” and the “Censorship Machines” articles.

Articles 13 in particular forces every internet platform to filter all the contents we upload online, ending once and for all the fandom culture. Which means you won’t be able to upload any type of fandom works like fan arts, fan fictions, gif sets from your favourite films and series, edits, because it’s all copyrighted material. And you won’t also be able to share, enjoy or download other’s contents, because the use of links will be completely restricted.

But not everything’s lost yet. There’s another round of voting scheduled for the early days of July.

What you can do now to save our internet, is to share these informations with all of your family members and friends, and to ask to your MEP (the members of the European Parliament from your country) to vote NO at the next round, to vote against articles 11 and 13.

Okay, so I’ve got some THINGS TO SAY, one of which is to roll my eyes massively at the above poster (not the OP):

If it seems as though Article 13 has sprung up out of nowhere, blindsiding people, it’s because it quite literally has. “It wasn’t going to be in the final draft but it was reintroduced on GDPR day [May 25th, the day GDPR went into effect],” says Cory Doctorow, who is organizing against the proposal with the Electronic Frontier Foundation.

(bolding mine) This is from an article in the Verge from two days ago, i.e., the day before the JURI vote, and overall, this law has not gotten nearly as much news coverage as it probably should. My primary news source is European (still, for a little while) and I hadn’t even heard of this law until today, i.e. after the JURI vote, so like, before you all: heartless internet people don’t reblog stuff having to do with Europe!! Maybe check how much news coverage it’s actually gotten.

Also, framing this as “when whole Europe might lose access to internet” is hugely misleading: it manages to both understate and overstate the problem. If you want a good source on what this law actually does and why it’s bad, Wired has a good breakdown. TL;DR it’s bad, it’s really really bad, not because it will make the internet go dark in Europe but because it will fundamentally change how the internet works for the entire world.

If you don’t want to click on the link, Article 13 is intended to end a “safe harbor” exemption that’s so far limited the penalties for companies that host user content, when that user content infringes on copyright; and requires all companies to build and check content against a database of copyrighted materials, like YouTube Content ID. It’s being pushed by the music industry (who—really, guys, Napster was a long time ago, you really need to get over it), but because of the way the law is written it would affect all companies that host user content, including (definitely) Tumblr and also potentially the AO3—even though transformative works are (probably) covered under fair use and are (probably) not actually illegal, because this kind of filtering frequently is overaggressive/doesn’t work correctly on either a technical or a legal level.

In other words: if you read the original post and were like: pfffft, fanfic’s not illegal: it doesn’t matter. This absolutely will catch material that’s not actually in violation of copyright, because it already does.

It is possible that companies that allow hosting of user content will just choose to blackout all of Europe, but it’s unlikely—the EU’s too big a market. What’s more unlikely is that tech companies will try to comply—which would be hugely, massively disastrous for the entire internet.

And the link tax (Article 11) is arguably even more dangerous than Article 13, because it will directly commodify links to reputable news sources, which is likely to make linking to unreputable news sources more appealing, just because they’ll probably be cheaper. Think the Guardian, WaPo, the NY Times, CNN, The Economist, the WSJ all falling off Google News results in favor of some asshole blogger, because the blogger doesn’t require a license for links. If you feel like you want to get your news from me, boy, guys, I have bad news for you.

Anyway the real point here is that because the internet is international, this law doesn’t just affect Europe, so don’t write this one off as a “European” issue—just like we’ve all been getting GDPR notices in the last few weeks as a result of an EU privacy law, we can anticipate that if this one passes, it will likewise affect all of us as well.

Okay heads up for all Americans eligible to vote:

The Supreme Court just issues a ruling allowing Ohio and other states to purge voters from their election registration rolls due to their failure to cast a ballot in previous elections.

This is a major victory for the Trump administration and the GOP, and a direct consequence of the Supreme Court being stacked with more conservative judges (the votes were 5-4). This is also a huge part of what Trump/the GOP were counting on to save them in the 2018 midterm elections, which is where Democrats have been hoping to take back a majority in the House, giving them more power to combat Trump’s abuses of power and Republican legislation.

What this means is YOU CAN NOT ASSUME THAT YOU ARE REGISTERED for the 2018 elections, just because you SHOULD be. Thanks to this decision, red states can purge voters’ registration based on their not having cast a ballot in even just previous federal elections, NOT just the national Presidential elections. Effectively, if you haven’t voted in previous senate races or for congressional representatives in the past few years, that’s all they need now to say you’re no longer registered and need to register again.

They’re deliberately counting on people assuming they’re still registered and so not checking until after registration deadlines have passed, or showing up to vote this November and only then finding out they’re no longer registered, when its too late to do a damn thing about it.

And this is absolutely targeted at marginalized communities, low income voters, disabled voters, and basically anyone who simply can’t always AFFORD to keep on top of every federal election and show up to vote in every senate race, etc. Which not so coincidentally happen to be all the communities and voters who have the most to gain from Democratic victories in the 2018 midterms and are the least likely to cast votes for GOP candidates at this point.

This was absolutely a calculated effort aimed specifically at keeping the GOP in power with a majority control of the government come November, and unfortunately, it has a DAMN good chance of accomplishing just that if it goes by unacknowledged. I’m not looking to alarm or panic anyone, simply to say:

If you are a registered voter in a red state at this point, please please please do not take your registered status as assumed. Check on your registration status, look up all relevant voter registration deadlines for your state and district, CIRCLE THAT SHIT ON YOUR CALENDAR, and check your registration status AGAIN right before those deadlines pass, so you can be sure of it before its too late to do anything about it til the next voting cycle.
